- The churns long ago were round shaped, ones like a barrel, about 3 feet high. They were wider at the bottom than at the top. They were made by skilful men called Coopers. These churns were made of oak.There is a round lid on top, and a dash called a churn dash. There is a round hole on the lid, and the churn dash is put through it, and worked up and down in the milk.The dash has a long handle with a nice round board, with 4 or 5 holes in it. We draw the dash up and down, and we continue that until the butter comes on it.Long ago they used to have many pisroges concerning butter.
