Long ago when the sheep were shorn the people kept the wool in a dry place, usually on a loft. Then in the long winter nights the women and young girls set to work to spin. First they teased the wool with their hands using a little oil to moisten it. Next they carded it and those cards were usually about a foot long and about a half foot wide.
