  1. Flax growing was once a very important industry in this part of the country. The people grew the flax and then they prepared it. First of all it had to be placed in a pond of water and after eight or nine days it was taken out and spread on the land to dry. Next it was scutched and the women-folk used to spin it on a small wheel worked by the foot. Then the weavers used to weave it on their looms and that is how the "Old Irish linen was made". The young girls then made it up into wearing apparel. Sheets and table-cloths were also made out of this linen. In olden days you were not considered respectable if a man had not a linen shirt for Sundays when he went to church but sad to relate more modern machinery has the old
