Tart a' brog

Long ago in Ballinglen, at Wakes, the young men used to play games, not through any disrespect to the dead person, but to pass the time pleasantly for themselves. The favourite game played was "Tart a' brog". The boys who were present at the wake used to make a mallet out of hay and then fifteen or sixteen young men used to sit in a circle on the floor covering their legs with hay.
Now one person used to stand in the centre of the ring and try and catch the mallet as it was passed round and every time he failed in doing so he would get a blow of the mallet on the back.
