- The Great Storm of 1839.
A great storm swept over Ireland in the year 1839. It is said to have been the fiercest storm that ever came. It lasted about 18 hours.
Other storms are said to have blown as strong but they didn't last as long.
This storm levelled stacks, houses, ricks, and stables as well as destroying crops and even forests. It left people hungry and homeless. Ships were wrecked on the wild seas and people that were dead for years were seen again.
That storm left people most careful in securing their houses and their haggards afterwards. Oftentimes since then people built their houses in valleys for shelter and through fear of another such storm.
