The Regan Family and Fairies
There is a tradition here that a person bearing the name Regan will never be drowned. The seanachie, Michael Began, gave me the following explanation for the belief.
"There was a man of my surname (Regan) living in Glenurla (between Belderrig and Ballycastle) and one evening he went to the head of the glen to tie his horse. The tying got entangled in the horses feet and while he was stooping loosening it a crowd of men surrounded him. They asked him to come with them for the night as they needed his help.
He refused at first for he knew they were fairies. They pressed him to come and promised him any reward he would ask. He agreed at last to go on condition that they left him back safe and sound again. They promised and the went with them. They were playing
