    The Houses Now and Long Ago
    The houses long ago were built of stone and mortar and sometimes they were built of mud. They were roofed with timber from a bog, the remains of a wood of long ago. Then there was straw or rushes put on top of that.
    There was not any flue in the houses. The fire was in the middle of he floor. The smoke kept going round about the house until it came to the door then it went away. Sometimes there was a hole in the roof to let the smoke out. There was not much light in these houses because the windows were very small.
    The mud walled houses were very warm. There were not many of them in this district, because there ware plenty stones in it.
