  1. There is a Mass Rock in Tavanaughmere bigger than any house. The priests in the days of the penal laws used say Mass on the top of this rock. If you chanced to pass by this rock you would find medals and crosses and other religious articles.
There was a big cave under the rock into which the priests used to go to hide from the Protestants. One day when the priest was saying Mass there a Protestant spy saw the priest and the people hearing Mass. He thought to climb the rock and when he was so far up the rock opened and fell. The priest and the people were saved but the boy spy was buried beneath the rock.
Mrs. Tiernan told me this story.
