  1. There I was again talking to Mrs. Morely last night. She was telling me a local story which she heard from her mother. There was once upon a time a man whose name was Peewit. He lived with his wife in a little cabin at the bottom of a hill. One day as Peewit was ploughing with his two oxen he heard somebody calling his name. Turning around he only saw a bird and he went on with his ploughing. Suddenly he heard the call again. Now this bird was a philibin and its cry is always peewit, but Peewit did not know this. He thinking that the bird was fooling him took up a heavy stone and threw it at the philibin that was perched on a fence.
    Instead of the stone falling on the bird and killing it it fell on the head of one of his oxen and killed him. Peewit was very sorry after what he had done. As he had no other oxen he killed the odd one and skinned
