Long ago dye was made from moss off a certain stone. They collected the moss, put it in a pot with cold water, and put what they were going to colour into the pot. They boiled all together for some time. When the dyed articles were taken out and washed they were taken and dried at the fire. When dry, they were a brown colour. Magenta was used for colouring red. Groundlogwood was often used when a brown colour was wanted. Chiplogwood was for dying clothes black.
