  1. Chancery River flows west of Ballyvary. At one place, it runs parallel with the Castlebar-Ballyvary road. Now a high wall separates the river from the road. Grandmother, who died a year ago, often told me she remembered when that wall was built. It was only after a man, horse and cart were drowned in the river one dark Saturday night. The man was returning from Castlebar Market. I cannot remember who, she said the man was or where she said he was from.
