- In former times hedge schools were common in this district. The local names for them were schools. The schools were held in barns. They were held indoors. One of them was situated in the townland of Culitbo, and the other in the townland of Barnacarrol. The names of the teachers were Mr. McLoughlin, Mr. Mannion and Mr. Curley.
Schools were not carried on in farmers' houses. They were paid twopence a week from every pupil and from that they got their food. The subjects taught in the hedge schools were English reading, English spelling sometimes Arithmetic and Irish Cathechish. The Arithmetic was done with a slate and quill pen or sometimes slate pencils were used. Irish(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
