  1. In olden times there were many forges in the country. They were very scarce. When the people wanted shoes for their horses they would be all the day gone. The smiths used to make weapons for time of war and the kings were (kings) kind to them to them always. There are five forges in the parish of Kilmaine, on in Knocknageehe and one in Gorgordan. They are all thatched. The smith works hard every day. They have a great deal of hammers and sledges.
