nights, but when the third one tried to pass a carriage went out before it and there it waited.
The cart had to wait there until the cock crew. Then the carriage disappeared, so the people in the cart went their way.
This shows that when the cock crows after twelve any spirit that is outside will disappear.

  2. An old custom at wakes was to have four men cutting tobacco all the night.
Women and men would then take a long clay pipe from a basket, which would be passed around and each one would say the following prayer:
    "Uaimh Críosta, brat brígde,
Roilig Pádraig 'na raibh liochta gráinne gainimhe ar a thráigh.
Drúcht ar a bhárr, le paidir agus creideamh le h-anam na marbh."

Another custom, even at the present time, is to stop the clock and shade the mirrors in the room where the corpse is laid out.
Any milk left thickening, while the corpse is in the house, should never be churned or used at all.
The dust or dirt swept from the floor is never thrown out till the corpse is coffined.
