  1. A hedge school was taught here about (-) years ago by an ex-soldier named Henry Vousden. He was regarded as a well educated man and it is said that he taught in Glantreag in the parish of Clonbur, Co. Galway, and on the island of Innismactreer on Lough Corrib before coming to the Neale. The following - some of whom were Protestants succeeded him - Farrell, Geddes, Moore and Mark Sears - the last mentioned was local postmaster during living memory. John Nevin*, a Catholic, was co-temporary with Sears. Another hedge-schoolmaster was Laurence Burke who lived here about eighty years ago.

*The school taught by this man was primitive in the extreme - stones were used as seats and the hour of the day was determined by the position of the sun-light when cast on a stone in the window sill.
