    came into the house when the woman would be churning he or she should take a hand at the churn or the butter would leave the milk.
    When a cow would calf the man that owned her used to tie a red string on her tail and pass a coal of fire around her body three times, they would not give any of the milk away until they would churn first. People used never give milk away on May day for fear they would give away the butter.
    If anybody was giving milk to a neighbour they used to put three drops of water in it for fear the butter would go. If anybody gave salt to a neighbour they used not return it again, or they would have bad luck.
