- A king lived in Connacht who had a cousin. The cousin left his home to become a hermit in the hills of Burren in County Clare. A hermit was a pious man who lived alone in the woods or in some quiet spot, so that nothing might disturb his devotions, Part of the hermit's day was spent in labour, in digging his little garden and tending the few animals he kept for food. The remainder of his time was passed in thinking about God.This cousin of the king had made a little hut for himself in a cave of the hills. He lived alone for seven years and no one knew his hiding place. How the king discovered it is told as follows ;
