- There are six forges in the parish of Balla and Belcarra. One is situated in the townland of Belcarra, near the river, another now discontinued in Kinally another in Newtown another in Logapuill another in Manulla, another in Balla at the crossroads outside the town. The forge in Logapuill was discontinued and reopened lately. The people who had the forge in Belcarra were Murray. There were three generations of smiths in the family. The last of them died about ten years ago. He was said to be a very strong man, and could life a half barrel of porter up in the counter. The forge in Belcarra was roofed with scraws and rushes. The door of the forge was never closed as it said no one ever stole anything out of a forge, as it was very unlucky. It is said the water used for cooling the iron, was good for curing a cut on your finger. The smith also cures proud flesh in a horse's or asse's mouth by burning it off. The Murrays made iron gates, tongs, grates, scufflers, harrows,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
