    The night of the big wind was on the sixth of January in the year eighteen thirty nine. It was said that it was going at the rate of a hundred miles per hour. It did a lot of destruction.Tradition tells us froth and seaweed were blown inland for miles and froth was to be seen on the trees that surrounds Gilligan’s house in Ballyglass. Fish were swept out of the sea and were caught in great numbers on land around Westport some time after. Michael McLoughlin’s father was taken off the road and left in a heap of mud in McEvilly’s yard where he was after leaving. Michael Foley, father of John Foley, who now lives in Ballyglass was at that time living in Burrin. His house was well sheltered by
