  1. Food in Olden Times.
Long ago the people usually had three meals a day. The breakfast consisted of stirabout made from oat meal. The dinner was of potatoes salt and buttermilk Sometimes the supper consisted of the same food as for dinner, but often the used stirabout.
In those days delph or crockery was unknown, but the people used "noggins". They were wooden vessels shaped like a barrel with two handles on them. It was the cooper who made these "noggins". There are very few coopers now a days, and the trade is nearly dead.
The potatoes were placed in a "sgib" in the centre of the floor. The people sat around the "sgib". The noggin of buttermilk was passed round from one person to the other. A "cast of potatoes was a very nice dish. The potatoes were roasted and then peeled. Next they were mashed with butter and eaten with buttermilk.
