Another of the local happenings which occurred was the burning of a neighbour's dwelling-house about two years ago. The chimney caught fire and the flames got out to the seiling of another room from which it reached to the thatch. All the neighbours hurried on the scene and helped to put down the flames with water which they got from the river already mentioned.

Local Happenings 3-12-'37
About forty years ago there was a most terrific flood in this locality. The heat was very intense during the day. In the afternoon thunder began to peal and lightning followed. In the evening it darkened so much that if appeared as night. Suddenly a cloud burst on the side of Keeper Hill and the rain poured like water out of a bucket bringing with it a piece of the hill.
Down the hill it came and followed the stream that passed by a farmer's house taking with it a part of the lodging house and a dairy with all its contents which belonged to Mr. William Clifford. It also took a horse's car from the same man which was brought down the river for a distance of two hundred yards.
It also entered the houses in Ballinouse which are situated on the banks of the river

Bird Lore
The robin the crow and the blackbird and the swallow are the birds commonly found in our district. The robin builds her nest in a bush or in a bank. The young of the robin are born naked.
The swallow builds her nest in a house top. She lines it with hay and covers it with clay on the outside. The swallows' eggs are elliptical in shape. She sits on the eggs about three weeks before they are hatched. When they fall low it denotes rain and when they fly high it denotes fine weather. Boys are told if they rob a bird's nest they will get sore hands or feet.
The swallows are migratory birds but the robin the crow and the blackbird stay with us for the whole year round. The people living in this locality do not know why small birds follow the cuckoo. Some say when the

'Tis kept by a man called Mick Murphy,
On the road between Newport and Rear.
4th. Verse.
Miss Annie will bring down her fiddle,
And play a nice lively air,
Nora will wait on the travellers,
She's a lassie with brown curly hair.
Old Michael himself he is civil,
And the law he will strictly obey,
Yet he will sell you four pints every Sunday,
On the road between Newport and Rear.
5th. Verse.
The boys have their new boots all torn.
They are out every night at a dance.
The girls are so fascinating,
You won't find their equals in France.
But they get the Niagara meagrams,
At the time of the drawing of the hay,
From the dancing and swinging till morning,
On the road between Newport and Rear.
6th. Verse.
You may travel from Queenstown to Derry,
From Dublin along to Mayo,
You may visit Killarney in Kerry,
Or the homestead of old Brian boru,
But you'll not find a place so enchanting,
Or people so jolly and gay

The Road between Newport and Rear.
1st. Verse
All ye who seek pleasure through Ireland
Do not spend your money too free,
In Youghal, Tramore or Dungarvan, Lisdoonvarna, Lahindh or Kilkee.
But you will find some enjoyment by coming,
And for fear that you might go astray,
When you land in Tipperary enquire for
The road between Newport and Rear.
2nd. Verse
'Tis there you'll find good-living farmers,
With hospitality flowing at their doors.
The same with their wives and their daughters,
Who supply to the wants of the poor.
The stranger no matter how weary,
If he happens to pass by the way,
He won't be left thirsty or hungry
on the road between Newport and Rear.
3rd. Verse
When you pass the white walls up the mountains,
You'll come to the old copper mine,
And when you proceed a little further, you'll find yourself in Tourienbrien.
There you can put up at a tavern,
Its likes you won't see every day,

In the year 1839 we had a big storm and rain. Some of the houses were blown down with the storm. The Nire River was flooded. Many sheep were drowned. Some windows were blown in with the storm. There was a woman from Glendaloughin and she was coming from Clonmel and the storm blew her into the river and she got drowned.

A Storm 19-11-'37
In the month of February 1899 there was a terrible snow storm. There was snow to the height of six feet. The tops of the fences and the fields were on one level. For a few days before the snow fell there was a piercing easterly wind. The weather was cold and very dark. The storm started with sleety rain and some large flakes of snow which turned to small flakes.
A woman from Ballybrien who lived about three miles from Ballymacarbery was on her way from Clonmel with provisions for her young family on the evening of the snow storm. She walked by the hill road from Clonmel accompanied by her little son aged about twelve years. When they were about a mile from their home so great was the snow and storm the poor woman got exhausted and lay down and died. The little boy made his way home as be hew could and told the neighbours who had her removed to her home.
That same evening there

in a small house in the parish for some years and later got a farm near Cahir in Co. Tipperary. At the time there was a lot of bad feeling towards Lord Ashtown and he was always under Police protection whenever he came to his local seat Glenahiery lodge and part or the house was blown down. It was never rightly proved who did it but bits of a pot were found afterwards which contained the explosive used and was identified as Lord Ashtown's own property. Glenahiery Lodge was burned down during the Black and Tan war.
Before Lord Ashtown, Lord Stradbrooke was the landlord of the Barony of Glenahiery. It was during his time in 1869 the famous election of Count De La Poer took place. Lord Stradbrooke got waggonettes, covered-cars, and carriages to take his tenants to Dungarvan to vote for the Protestant candidate Talbot. At Beary's Cross there was a pitched battle between the rival parties. The covered- cars and carriages were broken in bits and De La Poer's supporters drove into Dungarvan in the waggonettes. One soldier was killed and the other was wounded. Some of Lord Stradbrook's supporters sneaked into Dungarvan by round about ways. When they got there they locked into a store for safety until it was time for them to vote.
Count De La Poer was elected because he was a Catholic landlord and the people expected him to do much to help them, but he disappointed them.

A man who was quite a character in his way and locally known as Jack the Packer because of the packs fixed on the back of the donkey he rode caused great amusement by riding his donkey in the thick of the fight and not escaping blows from sticks and stones and reading from a paper what he declared was the Riot Act. He was arrested and put in jail.

in a small house in the parish for some years and later got a farm near Cahir in Co. Tipperary. At the time there was a lot of bad feeling towards Lord Ashtown and he was always under Police protection whenever he came to his local seat Glenahiery lodge and part or the house was blown down. It was never rightly proved who did it but bits of a pot were found afterwards which contained the explpsive used and was identified as Lord Ashtown's own property.
Landlords
In this as well as in other parts of the country landlords were very unpopular because they treated the people very harshly.
When times were bad if any of the tenants were unable to pay the unjustly high rents they with their families were thrown out on the roadside. Many people left their farms behind and went to America and Australia when relatives sent them the necessary money.
But always others were willing to pay even higher rents and a certain class of people did not wait until their neighbours had left, they offered more than their neighbours were paying, these people were called grabbers, so there was no security on the land then.
The landlords got their big tracts of land for changing their religion and for services to the King of England. He gave the best part of the land to his own friends and the real Irish only got the bad parts on the bogs and mountains. Many small farmers were evicted, their houses knocked down and the land made into one big farm to make the property more attractive and more valuable to the landlord.
In one big farm at Ballymakee there were seven farms in days gone by.
Lord Ashtown was the last landlord in this locality. During his time there were a few evictions, the most notable being the Carrigans of Toureagh. They were evicted for not paying rent and the farm was planted. They lived

My Townland
1. The townland of Glasha is in the parish of Four-mile-water and was in olden times part of the old parish of Kilronan in the Barony of Glenahiry.
There are seven farmhouses there now, there were eight long ago. There are three labourers cottages now, there were four mudwalled thatched houses long ago.
Some of the farmhouses are slated and some are thatched. The commonest surname long ago was Connolly but now all the names are different, Butler, Doocey, Mulcahy, Kearney.
There are five people over 70 and all are fluent Irish speakers including my granduncle. There are no ruined houses in the Townland. Many people went to America and Australia and got on very well there.
In Canon Power's history of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore Glasha is mentioned as the dwelling place of the priests of the parish.
The land is very good in this townland. There are fields through which a Mass path runs, one to Kilronan long ago and another to Four-mile-water. These paths are still open and used by people. No one would interfere with a Mass path or close it or build a house on it as they believe that the dead still use them and if they interfered with them something would happen to them.

Cnoc an Bhainne, gan bainne gan bláthach,

An Caisleán Riabhach, ná raibh riamh ar foghnamh,

Agus Páírc an Fhiaidh 's an diabhal sa chúinne.

Toibreacha Beannuithe
Tá trí toibreacha beannuithe sa pharróiste seo. Tá ceann acu i bPáirc an Fhiadh, timcheall míle go leith ó dheas ó'n scoil; tá ceann eile i mBán Fionn timcheall míle thiar thuaiadh ó'n scoil i bhfeirm Micil Ó Dubháin; tá an tríomhadh ceann le hais na reilige i gCoill Ronáin in aice le Cill Manaichín.
Páirc an Fhiadh
Fadó bhí an-chuid duine in a gcomhnuidhe i bPáirc an Fhiadh agus bhí tobar breágh doimhin ann in a bhfuighidís a gcuid uisce.
Lá amháin tháinig bean déirce nó bean siubhail agus do nigh sí éadaighe salacha ins an tobar agus ar an bpoinnte do thráigh an t-uisce agus ní raibh braon le feicsint.
Bamhór an cruadhtan e dos na daoine bochta a chomhnuigh ann mar b'éigin doibh dul go dtí tobar eile a bhí i bhfad uatha fé dhéin uisce.
Tamall ina dhiaidh sin tháinig bean des na comhursain go dtí an tobar. Do thug sí leí coinneal beannuithe agus uisce coisrighthe. Do las sí an choinneal agus do dhoirt sí an t-uisce coisrighthe ar an áit, annsan do chuaidh sí síos ar a glúnaibh agus d'iarr sí ar an Maigheean Muire an t-uisce a bhreith ar ais, agus ar an nóimeat do líon an t-uisce ins an tobar arís.
Ó'n lá san go dtí an lá indiu tugtar "Tobar na Maighdine Muire" ar an tobar agus deirtear gur leighiseadh a lan daoine ann, daoine a bheadh cosa tinne nó súile tinne acu.
