  1. The chief food in this area about sixty years ago was potatoes. These were eaten with herbs and buttermilk.
    Sometimes there would be a little porridge, which was eaten with salt an buttermilk. The potatoes were generally boiled in a kettle. On certain Fridays a mixture of onions, milk, and butter (if attainable) and this was called "callcannon" or "thump" Bread was very scarce, and this which was got was black,
