  1. The Hedge-Schools of Long Ago

    Long ago in the days of the "Penal Laws" when education was forbidden, the people used to be taught secretly. These schools were called "Hedge" schools because they were generally held outside in the open.
    There was an old school in Halvestown long ago which was taught by Mrs Doran. It is now only a sweet shop.
