    Local Marriage Customs.
    Marriages usually take place in Shrove. Shrove is the period from January 4 to Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. On that day it was the custom to chalk the people who were old enough to get married and had not done so. They also threw salt on them. On that night pancakes are made and a ring is put into them to see who will get the ring and be the first to get married.
    People never get married on Friday or during the month of May in this district -
