  1. Long ago the people were very fond of education. At that time there were no National Schools. There were only what were called Hedge Schools.
    There was a Hedge School in a barn belonging to Mr. Thomas Gately, Bogroad, Muckloon, Co. Galway.
    The subjects that were taught in that school was Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic in Irish. The pupils wrote on slates with a slate pencil. In those times the way the teachers were paid was the people gave them food and beds to sleep on, and the pupils
