  1. There was an old woman with three daughters Máirín, Peig, and Eibhlín. They were very poor. At last they made up their minds to look for work. Their mother made a cake of bread for each of the girls. Before they left their mother asked them which would they rather the whole of the cake or half the cake and her blessing. Peig said she would rather half the cake and her blessing. Eibhlín said the same. But Máirín did not say that, she said she wanted all the cake and no blessing and they went away. They were not gone far when Peig and Eibhlín beat Máirín and threw her into a dike and threw a rick of turf on her. Then they ran away thinking that she was dead but they were not gone very far when Máirín was after them. They
