Brian was not possessed of the literary attainments and general cultivation of mind which were so conspicuous in Alfred, but he equalled him in his patriotism, in his patronage of letters, and in his devotion. As soon as he was king, he confirmed the chieftains in their ancient privleges, and attached them to him by presents. He revised the genealogy of families and distributed them into houses, and regulated the precedence of his nobility.(continues on next page)
