    there used to be races and singing songs and playing fiddles and flutes, and climbing big poles to see which one would get to the top. There used to be foot races also. It used to be one and two o'clock at night when the people used to come home. There used to be a lot of prizes given to the best runner or to the best singer and a lot used to win the prizes. Prizes of two shillings or a half-crown used to be given. The people used to come from far and near to that fair. It was not to the fair they (fair) used to come but to hear the singing
