  1. One night James ODonnell of Derrycurran was coming from a dance about one o'clock. The place the dance was was five miles from his own house. At last he came to a village called Cummar. It was also very dark. He saw a black man sitting at a house on the side of the road. He put out his hands trying to catch him and the black man backed away. James ODonnell stood up and a child was put into his hands. It was the fairies that were there and they told this man to put the child under his coat and to go home and to tell the story to his mother. She put the child to bed and she stood up all night minding it. In the morning she went out for a can of water and when she came in the child was gone and she told her son James ODonnell about the child. When he got up out of bed he went down to the house and he got the child sleeping. He took the child
