  1. When they were in sixth class in my grandmother's time the school used to be opened at nine o'clock and they used to start work as soon as the school was opened. At first they had to be able to spell two big columns of hard words and the meaning of them. Then they used to do Arithmetic and Grammar and Geography. The roll used to be called at ten o'clock. The children would read a lesson one by one every day and after that they would have compositions.
