  1. Gruel for a dead man
    There were two old people living near a graveyard. The man died and a neighbourman came in visiting some time after he was buried. It was a very cold night and the woman put down a half-gallon of gruel and she brought the neighbourman with her to the grave and put the dead man sitting up and raised the half-gallon of gruel on his head to warm him. When he had all the gruel taken the man that was dead began to speak and told the woman to give some to the other man to warm him also. There was of course no gruel left except what adhered to the dead man's whisker, and the
