  1. About the year 1840 the schools of Connaght were different to what they are just now, especially here in Co Mayo. Before there were (no) any National schools built but they had then what was called Hedge schools; they got this name because the master used to teach the pupils under a hedge in Summer time and also on fine days in winter time. In the cold weather they would go to each house in the village in which there were children and then the parents would support the teacher. The natives
