  1. Michael Kearns who lived in Tavanagh in the parish of Straid and now living in Prison in the parish of Balla told me that his father used to get some thick rushes and peel them. Then he would fry a bit of lard and dip the rushes in it. He used to hang them up to dry.
    All the old women of the village would gather into one house with their spinning wheels and each one would have a rush candle. They
