  1. The houses long ago were made of sticks and clay. They had no glass in the windows and when the cold winter's breeze would be blowing into the Crannogs as they were called they spread a canvas bag on the windows to keep it out. For a door they used a few lats nailed together and left it up against the door-way without being hung on hinges at all.
