  1. One of the oldest abbeys of Ireland is situated in this parish. It was founded in 1216 by Cahal O'Connor who was king of Connact then. Years ago when St Patrick was in the west he found a little church in Ballintubber which means the village of the wells. Later the Monastery was founded in this spot. There were upwards to three hundred grey friars
