  1. When people are in bed at night young men and boys would put hay and straw down the chimney so as to get money. Nowadays marriages are contracted different people get married the week before Shrove, but most people wait until Shrove Tuesday. There were a good many marriages this year. People do not have as much sport now as in former times, the backs of the pair that would be getting married used to be chalked, but now those games are done away with. Bags of oats or straw or a cow would also be given instead of a fortune
