Many years ago a fishing boat was lost in the shannon near St. Thomas's Island when two lives were lost. There was one man saved as he swam to the bank. There were also several lives lost around the same place. The shannon is very deep at this point and is very dangerous for boating or fishing. The old people used to call it a whirlpool.
