Mr Thomas Whelan was a groom to Mrs Power of Castlefergus about fifty years ago.Mr Whelan was a of a restless disposition and often left Mrs Power and engaged himself to other farmers.Then when satiated with roving he would return to Mr Power again.
On one occasion Mr Whelan remained longer than usual away from Mrs Power,
People were wondering where he was and came to the conclusion that he was dead.At last Whelan returned to his native village mounted on a spirited charger.He received a great welcome and one neighbour remarked to him that they heard he was dead.
"I heard it myself"replied Mr Whelan "but I didn't believe it."
Mr Whelan indulged in "rhyming".On returning to Quin his native village after been absent for some time he announced his arrival by saying :-
