    About seventy years ago Mr Smyth lived in Ardsollus Cottage.

    stillness seemed to pervade the place. The noise of excavating appeared unearthly and talking under such circumstances seemed unnatural. They had recourse to the bottle of whiskey to give them dutch courage, while drops of cold perspiration poured down their faces. They unwillingly continued their work, and succeeded in reaching a large flat stone under which they surmised must be the hidden gold. They proceeded to raise the stone, when suddenly the weird hoot of an owl was heard. Instinctively the men dropped their tools and without a word walked towards the bottle of whiskey. They partook of sufficient to make them indifferent to fear. They continued their work and were succeeding in unearthing the stone when a large he goat was seen approaching them. He had tremendous horns and after walking two or three times around the bush he disappeared in the direction of the river that flows by the abbey.
