- This is the name of a deep black "poll" in Creevagh near Quin.
Long ago there lived in this place which was thickly covered with woods a poor man and the only four footed beast he had was a fat sheep .Now in those far off times it was the custom on the Feast of St Martin to kill a four footed beast and the poor man was very reluctant to kill the only beast he had his sole means of support,that gave him milk and wool.However he determined to kill the sheep and so keep up the custom of St Martin's Feast.Just as he was about to kill the sheep a pig rushed up to the door coming as it were from nowhere for there were no habitations within miles of his house ,and spurred blood on the threshold .Seeing now that the blood of a four footed beast was shed thus fulfilling an ancient custom ,he finished off the pig and after the family having eaten of the pork steaks he salted the meat and put it "saving".(continues on next page)
