  1. Turkenna Shooting Lodge
    16-6-'38
This lodge is built about one hundred and was repaired in thirty five years after it being built. The lodge itself was built at first and when it was repairing kennels and other out-offices were built. Men from the surrounding townland worked building it, at a wage of 1s 6d per day and two stone of Indian meal each week. It was built and repaired with sand from the Corra river two hundred yards from my home. Donnet Sampson the landlord of the townland build it. English gentlemen used to come every summer to hunt and fish. They came in side cares with their wives and families. They used to bring a number of game dogs with them, and these were housed at night in the kennels. They had also a coach house and stable. They people of Turkenna used to be employed carrying their things for them, and looking after the out-offices. It was burned in 1921 by the Sinn Féin Volunteers who were 'on the run' in the Black and Tan war. There were about nine rooms in it. The landlord of this townland was Donnet Sampson, but, he wasn't related to the present Sampsons.
