  1. The potato is the most important crop grown on the farm. The potato is not a native of this country. It came originally to Europe by Columbus and many years afterwards it was taken to this country and planted in the north of Ireland and has been planted here ever since. The potato crop is the most important one grown by the farmer in this country.
    The potato crop though one that needs unceasing attention from beginning to end thrives greatly in all parts of Ireland.
    When the potato stalks appear above the ground they are moulded which helps the growth very much.
    The potato does not thrive in hot dry conditions like Australia and Egypt.
