The biggest fairs of the year are the Holland - tide fair, the margaidh mor which is the market before Christmas, and also the May fair. The May fair and the Hollandtide fair are so big because it is at these fairs that hiring takes place. Any one who wants a job goes to this fair and any one who is remaining on their old place goes to the fair to enjoy themselves.
Bonham's (called suckers) There is a market for "suckers" on the fair day and another on that day fortnight - called the middle market.
Every Monday is a market day in Monaghan but Wednesday and Saturday are also market days for the sale of Potatoes, oats, & Grassseed during the period of the year when these are for sale.
Friday used to be the pork market day but in recent years this market has ceased as the local factories in the town take the pigs any day.
