- The people called the old schools hedgeschools. The hedge school was held in Moyasta. Teachers were paid by the people and the payment was called school fees. The teacher used be kept in every house in every house in his school district for a night and fed. The subjects taught were English writing, Reading and simple Arithmetic. The old teachers had Irish. They did not speak it in school because Irish was suffressed at that time by the English Government. The pupils had books. They used do writing with quills. Slates were used in the hedgeschools. The pupils used sit on sods of turf.
