    Be held on the frozen deep,
    Where the north king's stormy breathings
    Over wilds of snow-land sweep?
    How will an English Christmas
    Be held by the gallant band,
    Who seek through the ice-bound waters
    A path of far-off land?
    I sit by my cheerful ingle,
    And often my fancy strays
    To that sunless clime where nature
    Her sternest mood displays.
    They here no voice from the ocean,
    No silver bell from the sea!
    Hushed in its pulseless bosom
    In its wondrous melody.
    Held in its iron whiteness
    I see the good ships lie,
    Bitter it smites the sailor
