“About the year 1864 there was a hedge-school in Rockmount.”
About the year 1864 there was a hedge-school in Rockmount. The teachers name was Mr. O'Brien. He and Mr. Houlihan lived at the foot of Pound Hill. The old cabin where he taught was covered with briars and bushes. The teacher used to sit on an old stool. The children of the surrounding country came every morning to the hedge-school. They used to sit down on rocks and learn their lessons.
