  1. 'Tis not so very long ago.
    Jim was a little chap you know.
    With cheeks so red and eyes so blue.
    And hair a lovely golden hue.
    He seldom missed a day from school.
    But hated lessons as a rule.
    For figures and such things to him.
    A perfect bore they are said Jim.
    He'll tell two and one are four.
    And five and six are just a score.
    His copy too was full of scratches.
    In fact a thing of shreds and patches
    But when it came to reading time
    Or spelling either prose or rhyme
    Or getting off by heart a hymn
    T'was always Greek to lazy Jim.
    Each evening when he came from school
    He fling his bag upon a stool.
    Or on a chair or on the floor.
    And frequently behind the door.
    His cap he threw upon some shelf.
    And ne'er could find it by himself
    But worse of all he never thought
