  1. 1. For a pain in the side the cure old people had was to take up a stone and to spit in it and leave it back in the same place again turned up side down.
    2. The cure for a stye in the eye was to pick a thorn off a gooseberry bush and to give the stye a pick with the thorn or to rub a gold ring to the stye for three mornings fasting.
    3. If children had the whooping cough and if one saw a man riding on a white horse and asked for a cure for the whooping cough whatever the man would say, the children should do it, or to drink the leavings of a ferret.
    4. The cure for a swollen ankle is to bathe it with potato water.
