I
In strolling through the country round,
Last spring I chanced one day.
The owner of Tormenter to meet upon the way.
And when he knew I’d wish to see, once more the famous mare,
He invited me to Cappagh-Lawn to spend the evening there,
Hospitably he feasted me, then took me to the stall,
And heard my admiration of a young mare trim and small.
He said as away he turned, from where my glances fell,
That is Tormenter’s daughter, I am naming her Gazzelle.
II
He smiled to hear my prophecies, upon the coming race,
And half admitted all her breed, were bound to go the pace.
I parted with my gracious host, as shades of evening fell.
Resolved within myself to keep, an eye upon Gazzelle.
III
Killnocken soon was coming off, the tips were going round.
“All-Over” was to take the cake, no better could be found.
But when the race was over, Ah they taught to spell,
