  1. In olden days the beggarman was more common than he is today.
    One night about nine o'clock when the neighbours including Con O'Brien of storytelling fame, were gathered together for the usual gossip when a knock was heard at the door. This was unusual, for instead of knocking they used to lift the latch and walk in.
    The men looked at each other in surprise, and after some time, the man of the house went to the door and opened it and was confronted by a tall welldressed man who said:
